Your information, explained
Privacy Policy
Local connections work better when you know what you’re sharing.
Effective September 5, 2026
1. Who we are
Yard Sale Map, available at yardsalemap.com, is operated by Tenmile Technologies (“we,” “us,” or “our”). This policy explains how we handle personal information when you browse the site, create an account, publish items, offer services, organize events, participate in discussions, or contact us.
For privacy questions or requests, email feedback@yardsalemap.com with “Privacy” in the subject line.
2. Information we collect
- Account and security information. Your email address, display name, password hash, verification records, session identifiers, and password-reset records. Account and security records can include IP addresses, browser information, and timestamps.
- Posts and photos. Titles, descriptions, prices, availability, service details, images, inventory records, publication status, and event dates. We store drafts as well as published content.
- Locations. Towns, addresses, and coordinates you enter or select for your profile, posts, and events. Your saved profile address can be used to prefill an event location. The browser may also ask permission to use your current location to center the map.
- Community activity. Questions, notes, host updates, replies, reports, moderation decisions, and records used to prevent abuse.
- Support and technical information. Messages you send us and technical records needed to operate and troubleshoot the service, such as requests, errors, IP addresses, and device or browser details.
Please do not upload sensitive documents, payment-card details, passwords, or other people’s private information. Photos and descriptions can reveal personal details even when a map pin is approximate.
3. What becomes public
Published listings and events can be viewed without an account, shared, and indexed by search engines. Public information may include your display name, listing photos and descriptions, prices, service area, event dates, and the contact email you put on a post. Your account email is not automatically a public profile field, but it becomes public if you use it as a listing’s contact email.
Individual item and service map pins use approximate town coordinates by default. If you choose a spot on the map, we store and publish the coordinates you select; that spot can identify a precise location. Yard-sale pages and pins can show the event’s full address and precise location. Check these details before publishing. An approximate pin does not conceal an address you include in text or an image.
Approved questions, notes, updates, and replies are public with the contributor’s display name. Pending contributions are visible to their author and moderators. Reports are available to moderators and are not displayed publicly or provided to hosts as a report feed; a host who is also a moderator has moderator access.
Drafts are not included in public discovery. Ended published events may remain accessible with their discussion. Closing or removing content from the site does not remove copies already saved by visitors or search engines. Avoid treating uploaded image links as a secure way to share confidential files.
4. How we use information
We use information to create and secure accounts; publish and display posts; locate listings on the map; process photos; operate discussions; review content and reports; prevent fraud and spam; provide support; maintain and improve the service; and meet legal obligations. We send operational emails such as account verification and password-recovery messages.
Moderation may combine automated checks and human review. Some yard-sale images are sent to an automated image-analysis provider to help evaluate content. Email verification or moderation approval does not verify identity, professional qualifications, attendance, purchases, or the truth of every statement.
5. Cookies, browser storage, and location permission
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in. The site’s navigation tools may also store recently visited page content in browser storage to support back and forward navigation. Discussion and moderation pages are configured to opt out of that page-history storage. Browser settings let you clear cookies and stored site data; blocking essential cookies can prevent sign-in features from working.
The site does not currently include advertising trackers or a third-party behavioral analytics tool. We do not use the site’s data for cross-site targeted advertising. External resources still receive technical request information as described below.
You can deny or revoke browser location permission and browse the map manually. Centering the map on your device’s location is separate from choosing a location to publish. Map-tile requests can reveal the area you are viewing to the tile provider.
6. Service providers and other disclosures
Running the site requires outside services. Depending on the feature you use, these include:
- Hosting and storage: infrastructure providers that process site traffic, application data, logs, and backups, including our hosting provider Render.
- Email: our email provider, Fastmail, processes recipients’ addresses and operational or support messages.
- Maps and places: OpenStreetMap tile servers receive map requests, including IP and browser information. Google Places and Geocoding receive searches or addresses submitted for location lookup. Opening a directions link takes you to Google Maps.
- Automated moderation: OpenAI processes images and related content submitted for automated listing checks.
- Content delivery: external services that deliver browser libraries and styles can receive your IP address, browser information, and request metadata.
These providers process information under their applicable terms and privacy policies. Information may be processed in the United States or other countries where providers operate, whose privacy laws may differ from those where you live.
We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to comply with law or lawful requests, protect people or the service, investigate abuse, resolve disputes, or carry out a business transfer subject to applicable privacy obligations. We do not sell personal information or disclose it to advertisers for cross-context behavioral advertising.
7. Retention and security
We retain information for as long as reasonably needed for the purposes described here, including operating your account, displaying content, resolving disputes, detecting repeat abuse, and meeting legal obligations. Retention depends on the type of record and its purpose. Removing public content does not necessarily immediately erase related moderation records, security logs, or backup copies.
Passwords are stored as hashes, and account recovery uses expiring tokens. We use technical and organizational measures intended to protect information, but no system is completely secure. Use a unique password and contact us if you suspect unauthorized account activity.
8. Your choices and privacy requests
You can edit available profile fields and posts, close listings, and withdraw your own discussion contributions through the site. To request account closure, access to your information, correction, deletion, or a copy of your information, email feedback@yardsalemap.com. There is not currently a self-service account-deletion control.
Depending on where you live and which laws apply, you may also have rights to restrict or object to processing, receive portable information, appeal a request decision, or complain to a privacy regulator. We will handle applicable requests in accordance with the law and explain any restriction on fulfilling a request. We may need to verify your control of the account before disclosing or deleting information. Do not send identity documents unless we specifically request an appropriate verification method. We will not penalize you for exercising applicable privacy rights.
You control whether to publish a contact email or an exact event address. Messages and transactions conducted directly with other users are subject to those users’ own handling of information; this policy does not govern their independent activities.
9. Children
The service is intended for adults, and account holders must be at least 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided information, contact us so we can investigate and take appropriate action.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the service or our practices change. The effective date above identifies the current version. For material changes, we will provide appropriate notice, such as a prominent site notice or email, and obtain consent where required by law. A revised policy does not override legal requirements that apply to previously collected information.
